Insight: a Praxis Immersion Programme

At Praxis, we have shaped an immersion programme, called Insight, which is envisaged as aspontaneous learning process to facilitate policy makers, implementers and advocates to dialogue with communities to enrich their knowledge and understanding. Unlike an orientation or a study visit, the immersion programmerequiresparticipants to be a complete part of the lives of their host families and communities during the period of the stay.
An immersion is a guided, total experience in which a participant spends a number of days fully immersed in the daily realities of poor people from the developing world.

How does an immersion work
a. Planning, immersions are customised to the the specific learning needs of the participants to maximise learning outcome;
b. A pre-immersion briefing, to prepare immersees and ensure they get the most out of their experience;
c. Stay with the family for a minimum of 3 nights. Immersees take full part in the lives of their host, help them in their daily tasks and interact with them and the community.
d. A post-immersion debriefing, which takes immersees, translators as well as hosts through a reflection process, both individually and collectively.

Who can participate in an Insight?

Insight is a voluntary and open learning experience. It is for those who want to learn more than the classroom offers. However, it should be particularly imperative for those who can take critical decisions to eradicate poverty and promote an inclusive development.

Praxis organisestheme based immersion as well tailor-made based on the organsational need in different locations in India and around the globe.
Praxis has over the last few years has organised immersions that provide a balance of breadth and indepth exposure of realities to the participants. While living with the host families, participants can understand the real problems and their coping mechanisms. The programme is designed such that the participants also understand the societal level complexities in terms of social exclusion and community development initiatives happening at multiple levels in that context. One of its prominent immersion-based programmes includes “Tabahikigawahi” (Witness to Devastation) where participants met and stayed with villagers to understand problems associated with the Kosi flood (Bihar). Similarly, it organised a programme on flood-related disaster preparedness for participants.
