Job profile
Working independently and in teams, the communications officer will be responsible for the development and execution of all communication-related initiatives of Praxis.
Main duties and responsibilities
The communications officer will be expected to help develop, manage and innovate the Praxis communication portfolio through new ideas on how to maximise effectiveness of each engagement by the organisation. This includes the following spectrum of tasks:
Publications, Video and Other Media Products
Design content and tools for internal and external communication and disseminate core process to facilitate learning – these could be audio, visual, written or in other forms
Support programme team with inputs in editing and innovatively and effectively communicating study findings.
Build the profile of Praxis by contributing to the knowledge building process, engaging in public relations and bringing about quality products
Develop and update content for websites (organisational and project websites)
Support the communication unit’s work in the production of monthly newsletters, internal and external publications, video documentation and related processes and other products
Liaising
Actively engage with different social media forums to bring visibility to the work Praxis does; support advocacy efforts; facilitate discussions on issues of social relevance
Develop partnerships with media persons, develop press relations and liaise with media planning and monitoring agencies for greater visibility for the issues Praxis works with
Establish initial linkages and collaborations with agencies and media for marketing of communication products
Proposal development
Identify opportunities for supporting communication initiatives and other work to build the Praxis portfolio and develop proposals for the same
Develop social media networking and linkages with organisations, mobilise sufficient quality and quantity of human and financial resources to support communication engagements
Others
Contribute to the development of varieties of high-quality thematic communication products
Create and update the Praxis information database of national and global communication scenario and collect feedback and evaluations of the audience / addressees on each of communication initiative
Contribute to Praxis policies and strategies from time to time
Required qualifications, skills and experience
Masters Degree/PG Diploma in Mass Communication, Development
Four years of direct experience in working with mass media (news/advertising) or experience in working with development communication
Good team player who is able to work independently on own initiative and organise time effectively and within a range of conflicting deadlines.
Good negotiating and diplomatic skills with experience of maintaining effective partnerships
Good financial management and budgeting skills and a flawless record of financial integrity
Proficiency in spoken and written English
High degree of competency using communication related computer programmes and software used for designing
Other skills
Demonstrable interest in the potential of using media for social development
Exposure to and understanding of audience research and the integration of research findings into creative outputs
Understanding of international development processes and practices and commitment to international development objectives, preferably interfaced with media
Knowledge of Hindi and other regional languages

The Workshop 2013

From Beneficiaries to Agents of Change was launched in Chennai on January 23rd in the presence of members of marginalised communities who can use the self-administrable tools in the book to assess their community mobilisation process. The book has been put together and validated by Praxis with inputs from several community-based organisations in Tamil Nadu and Manipur. It can be used for anybody wanting to assess community preparedness for vulnerability reduction.
