Profile of the Village
Martahalli is located on the Karnataka side of the border with Tamil Nadu. Most of the villagers have been relocated here following the construction of the Mettur dam in 1934. Families’ economy is mainly based on agriculture. The forest and its resources represent another important source of income. Although geographically in Karnataka, the local culture of this area is very close to the one of Tamil Nadu because of their proximity and villagers’ origin. The system of transports is quite poor as well as communication. There is almost no access to information and technological innovation, which – among other aspects - explains why the agricultural techniques practiced are still highly labour-intensive and time consuming.
