The Musician’s Dance
Like a mirage he emerges from the dunes, the melodies purring like a heart broken kitten. Robed in a cream kurta and crimson turban, the Musician saunters up smoking a beedi. He’s strumming a ravanhattha, the traditional gourd-bottomed fiddle that the Bhopas, a Rajasthani caste, carve, sell, and play. He sinks down next to me in the sand. Milling about a rooftop café, I pause to look out at the Lake Palace. It crowns mossy Lake Pichola like a dollop of curd does a dish of daal. I’m waiting for the infamous Udaipur sunset, just itching to see that burning orange in the sky backlight the milky palace in the lake.
