Smart Children, Smarter Cities | Tom Thomas | TEDxSSCBS

Can a city be smart without it being built with the active participation and ownership of all citizens and most importantly its children? Can a city be smart without applying Gandhi's talisman for Swaraj? By that token, we must ask ‘will the city planning restore, a poor, disabled girl child, to control over her life and destiny?’. Tom Thomas in his talk explores these ideas in a greater detail. Tom has over 20 years of experience in international social development with expertise across various thematic areas. He has conducted participatory assessments and evaluations and is a proficient facilitator of participatory action research and participatory learning activities in areas including poverty, health, food security, education, democratic decentralization etc. His association with Praxis began in 2000 when he took over as CEO. Prior to joining Praxis, he had been the Director with Action Aid in India, Bangladesh and the UK. He has led Praxis on several important assignments, both nationally and internationally. Moreover, he has also been a strong advocate for sustainable development and equitable education and has headed projects based on the same. His strong determination to see equality in this society, divided by class and religion, is transforming the crooked and biased perceptions of the masses to un-bigoted ones. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
